PLUMBING GUIDE

Hidden water leak checks

When water use is unexplained, gather the symptoms before agreeing to open walls or floors. A high bill alone does not locate a leak.

Independent referral site. Confirm the provider, license, availability and any diagnostic fee before agreeing to work.

Gather the evidence first

Note when the bill changed, any warm spots on floors, sounds of running water with fixtures off, and meter movement with everything shut off.

The meter test

With all water off inside and out, watch the water meter's leak indicator or low-flow dial. Movement suggests water is going somewhere.

Leak detection before opening walls

Ask whether the provider offers electronic leak detection to locate the problem before cutting into surfaces, and what it costs.

Questions before you call

Does a high water bill prove a plumbing leak?

No. Irrigation, a running toilet and rate or usage changes can all be involved. A meter test is a useful next step.

Who pays for leak detection?

Confirm the diagnostic fee with the provider before work begins, and ask whether it is credited toward repair.
